Bollnäs is located a few hours’ drive north of Stockholm, by the lake Varpen, at the juncture of Ljusnan and Voxnan rivers. Its proximity to larger urban centres, its well-developed transport infrastructure and the local entrepreneurial spirit combine to make Bollnäs an ideal small business municipality. Positive development
Growth has resulted from the municipality’s focus on renewal and its cooperation with the local business community, along with factors such as our excellent location and transportation network. There are currently fully 2000 registered companies, with upwards of 100 new registrations annually.
Most employment occurs within health, childcare and elderly care, various industries and commerce and transportation. Another important branch with a solid future is tourism.

A pleasant county
Bollnäs is a pleasant town with a population of 26 000, of which 13 000 live in the central urban area. Others live in the surrounding villages of Arbrå, Kilafors and Rengsjö or in the smaller hamlets throughout the county.
As a family it is easily to re-locate here, as there is seldom any need to queue for childcare, transportation is provided for children who live far from school, and the public music school is both affordable and extensive.

During recent years Bollnäs municipality has concentrated on providing quality housing for the elderly. Accessible flats with services have been built near the downtown. Cooperative networks have been established between health service doctors and the municipal information centre.

Many who work in neighbouring towns and counties choose to live in Bollnäs, as local trains and busses make commuting simple. And it takes only two hours to get to Stockholm Arlanda airport.

Bollnäs has more than 400 social clubs and societies making opportunities for a satisfying leisure time for all tastes and interests. Nearness to lakes, streams, forest and mountains encourages fishing, hiking, cycling and canoeing. Cultural events take place year-round. Everything from theatre and rock festivals to folk music and art exhibitions.

Winter activities are abundant here. There are cross-country ski trails in numerous areas, and Bolleberget is a family-oriented centre for downhill skiing, while nearby counties provide more downhill opportunities. Considering a bit of time off to experience nature and interesting activities? Wilderness is always close by in Hälsingland, as are hiking paths, lakes, and natural wonders. But you can also go on numerous cultural excursions, such as to our traditional farmhouses, handicrafts centres and sites full of activities for children.

Summer days and evenings linger long with music, dancing, theatre and sports. Bandy takes centre stage in winter, of course, but you can also go skiing, horse or sleigh riding, dog-sledding or snow-mobiling.


Our stately Hälsingland period farmhouses are currently being considered as a World Heritage Site. Visit a few of these, or attend one of many musical events. Don’t forget to make a trip to Växbo where you can experience both traditional and modern flax and linen spinning and weaving industries.

Bollnäs has many interesting museums: an old-fashioned general store, a narrow-gauge railway and a view into the history of timber rafting just to name a few.

Art in many forms is shown in galleries, Hälsingland’s farm houses, museums and other venues. Mårten Andersson in Freluga outside Bollnäs is one of our best known artists. Others include Per Englund and Fritiof Strandberg,

Handicrafts have a prominent position here, and traditions in craft skills have been passed on through many generations. Bollnäs offers an extensive variety of finely crafted products.
